Since we've spent time lately dealing with "lists" of ways in which certain people handle things sans integrity, make decisions that go against the very idea of consideration, and/or otherwise break promises, I figured I'd make the first post a list of things that people have done that are actually wonderful. Here's some things that fly right in the kisser of that ol' minimum obligation nonsense. Do feel free to comment and/or add to this.
1. Through public demand, many city buses now have bicycle racks. This encourages not only use of public transportation, but exercise as well (The invention of the bicycle itself is a wonderful thing, I might add).
2. Ever take a trip to Cape Cod? Somebody had the sense to designate much of it as "development free," keeping at least some of the east coast, well, development free. How many tourists do you figure have appreciated that one? Can you count that high?
3. Though one of the first things George W. Bush did as "president" was to cut millions from public library funding, that awesome social service is still around. It often keeps me from having to pay rental fees for movies shown in class!! Heh heh. Oh, and there's books in those places too.
4. Here's a list within a list: These are folks who stood up to injustice, in one way or another. Look 'em up!
-Sojourner Truth
-Harriet Tubman
-Malcolm X
-Martin Luther King Jr.
-Cindy Sheehan
-Mother Jones
-Emma Tenayuca
-the women in Pennsylvania who won a class action suit against Wal-Mart a year or two ago for underpaying them
-IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against War) Check their speeches at Democracy Now's website (www.democracynow.org)
-Thomas Young, Iraq veteran who's now the focus of the documentary film Body of War
-add your own names (not your names, but you know, people who belong in this list)
5. The National Park system of the U S of A. Let's face it, here's an example of govt. stepping in to keep people from destroying everything. No doubt we would've!
